Great Ocean Road Dog Friendly Travel Guide

From east to west, here are some ideas for travelling the Great Ocean Road with a dog.

Torquay

Technically the Great Ocean Road starts on the west side of Torquay at the roundabout but this very busy tourist town is super dog friendly with dog beaches, cafes and restaurants and nearby bush walks.

Dog Friendly Accommodation in Torquay

The Sands in Torquay (booking.com) is about 3km from the town centre and has dog friendly rooms thoughtfully designed with direct ground floor access to outdoors! Make sure you pick the specificed dog friendly rooms when booking.

Dog Friendly Camping near Torquay

Torquay Foreshore Caravan Park is dog friendly on specific sites between the 1st of May to 31st of October only (excludes Melbourne Cup)

There are a few nearby HiCamps that are dog friendly, the closest dog friendly one to Torquay I found is this one called ‘Nest Retreat’ and basically the only option for dog friendly camping in summer that’s close to Torquay to take advantage of all the dog friendly beaches and cafes.

Torquay to Anglesea

Between Torquay and Anglesea there are some nice dog friendly walks, especially around the Pt Addis area.

Things to do between Torquay and Anglesea with Dogs

  • Surf Coast walk in either direction from Bells Beach
  • Point Addis Beach/Addiscot Beach (On lead all year) – beautiful beach highly recommend
  • Koorie Cultural Walk (signage worn away but views at the top are nice) & can end with Point Addis beach walk to cool down
  • Iron Bark Basin Walks – Iron Bark Track, Jarosite Track, Jarosite Mine TrackIron Bark Basin Nature Trail Walk
  • Surf Coast Walk (accessible from Torquay, Pt Addis, Hurst Road etc runs along coastline)

Anglesea

Anglesea is a relaxed bush town on the Great Ocean Road famous for its easy to spot Kangaroos that laze around on the Golf Course.

Dog Friendly Camping near Anglesea

Anglesea Caravan Park is dog friendly from 1st of February to the 15th of December. They have two dog friendly cabins for small dogs only and you have to call to book. It’s in a great location on the river and beach and a short walk from the shops and restaurants.

Currently, the closest nearby crown land campsite that’s dog friendly is inland at Hammonds Road North which is a bit of a drive from the coast.

Things to do in Anglesea with Dogs

  • Anglesea General Store Cafe outdoor tables
  • Offlead all year dog beach west from O’Donohue Road
  • Anglesea & Point Roadknight ‘Timeshare’ beach (offlead restricted times busy months)
  • Get a Gelato from ‘Gelato Gelato’ or ‘Nordenfine’ and wander to the beach or along the river
  • River Walk (easy gravel path along the river past the visitor centre with some little platforms to look over the water). Pathway suitable for short wander with prams and wheelchairs
  • Surf Coast Walk east or west as short as far as you like
  • Other nearby walks on the Great Ocean Road

Anglesea to Aireys Inlet

Between Anglesea and Aireys Inlet there is a massive long dog beach suitable for long dog friendly beach walk. It is through land managed by Parks Victoria but the beach is dog friendly.
